Memories of Gibraltar…

Gibraltar has been a wonderful stopover on my tour… Not only have I been able to service the Big Fella, but I have recharged my own batteries after the long haul across North Africa, and I am now ready for the many miles that I must cover to get to North Cape in Norway…

Here are a few snaps of Gibraltar that I have not included in any of my posts, but will help give you an idea of the many interesting things there are to see and do on The Rock…

Vessels line up in the Baie de Algeciras, waiting to either offload or take on fuel...

No question...!!!

Pepe's pride and joy, the mounted head of an Andalucian fighting bull...

John's favourite watering hole, The Lord Nelson...

Plaque on the outer wall of the old gateway to Spain... The only other entry went down to the harbour, and was known as Sea Port...

King's Bastion, formerly housed massive cannon, now a Leisure Centre...

Statue of Lord Horatio Nelson, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, where his fleet made merry with the French and Spanish. Not a single British ship was lost in the battle...

The old harbour of Gibraltar, where Nelson's fleet would have anchored to take on provisions...

Irish Town in Gibraltar...??

The Big Fella would be delighted to hear that I refused the owner of this boat's offer of a straight swap for him...

Casemates, the open square lined with pubs and restaurants, where visiting bands play for the public...

Loredana and Jenny... My hostesses in Gibraltar...

John stands outside the workshop where the bike was serviced, the Rock of Gibraltar soaring up behind him...

The Clipper, another interesting pub...

Tomorrow I start on my ride to Portugal and then back into Spain… I still need to decide exactly which route to take through France, but that I will do when I get to Andorra.

The bike felt good under me yesterday on my ride to Tarifa, and I think now that half the Sahara has been removed from the air filter, the power was certainly there… John and I had a good laugh when the mechanic at Klaus’s workshop explained how a small pile of sand had fallen out of the air filter when he tapped it on the floor…

Today I fiddled about getting the panniers re-packed, the globe on a spotlight replaced and with John’s assistance, I am now ready to roll on through Iberia…

The tail-less Barbary Apes of Gibraltar...

The eastern shore of Gibraltar, known as Levante, is sparsely populated, and the weather on this side of The Rock is not nearly as good as that on the western side... This shot was taken from high up on the Upper Rock...

John, Jenny, Loredana and I at the Pillars of Hercules...

  • Hi Ronnie,
Great to see the website is up and running again , no problems so far. It was great to have you in Gibraltar and you will be welcomed with open arms should your route somehow head south again.
Your Gibraltar memories look great and it is a true reflection of the rock.
A long way to go and we will be following you all the way, Jenny was amazed that you had a picture of her on the site and she still goes into the room looking for you.
Godspeed and travel safely, A mighty undertaking that you are on but I think that although it is still a long way to go, Having had the pleasure of meeting you I would say that you are a long way down the road to healing your heart.

No need to panic, Ronnie is fine and will catch up as soon as he can. He is making up for lost time and is in the saddle of Big Fella doing approximtely 800-1000km a day. I spoke to him on the weekend, he was in the north of France.

Thanks Charmz, when you speak to him again pse tell him he is in our thoughts, and NOT to drive too fast!

  • Hi Antonia ! Borge can be such a spoil-sport !! Despite my best efforts to get to Sweden in time to meet you there, I have been thwarted by officialdom, bad weather and some prolonged visits with good friends… (OK… If you must know, there was also some drunkenness… er…. I mean a pounding headache or two…!) Great to hear your news of the bike test !! Go Girl !!!!

See you guys in the U.K. ! R.
