A Brief History of Qatar…

A day in Doha can be boring…

Two days in Doha is something you would not wish on a close friend…!!

A change of plan saw me having to delay my flight until the morning of the 20th, which meant that I was stuck in Doha for a second day… And the weather showed no signs of improvement either…

Down on the Corniche, the wind was blowing strongly, and after a short walk down to a semi-circular wall where a large number of murals were depicted, I snapped off the photos below and then retreated to the relative comfort of my over-priced hotel room…

In the good old days, Qataris lived out in the desert with their camels...

Kept themselves regular by eating the dates that grew on the palms they planted...

They also kept small herds of sheep and goats to keep their camels company...

*********

Trees were jealously guarded because they provided some shade from the scorching sun...

... and played with their Falcons...

The men trimmed their beards and visited their mates... They drank strong coffee...

*******

...er, I mean hunted for food with their Falcons to supplement their meagre diets...

Then one day, after a prolonged bout of boredom, Ishmael decided to build a boat...

... their women worked their butts off, spinning yarn to make tents and clothing...

*******

And Ahmed grudgingly agreed to help out...

... in order to harvest the rich bounty provided by the sea...

Tired of eating camels, goats and dates, Mustaffa suggested they make nets and lobster traps to fish with...

******

Later they heard that their cousins the Bahrainis, were finding pearls....

Some of them made enough money to branch out and start a fruit and veg stall...

So they gathered together all the non-smokers and got them to dive for pearls too...

*******

Then oil was discovered off the northern tip of the coast, and with that, life in Qatar was changed forever....

So that they could spend more time trimming their beards, visiting their mates and drinking coffee...

...allowing the locals to pay migrant workers to build a few skyscrapers, and encourage tourists to visit their beaches...
